You Are Writing a Story — The Question Is: Which One?
Jan 04, 2026Most of us don’t wake up one day and consciously choose the story of our lives.
We’re busy.
We’re responding.
We’re doing our best with what’s in front of us.
And slowly, without realizing it, the story starts writing us.
But here’s a powerful reframe I’ve been sitting with lately:
You are not only living the story — you are the author of it.
And not just the author… you’re also the director and the actor.
That changes everything.
The Stories We Fall Into (Without Choosing)
Many people live inside a story they never paused to name:
-
The Survival Story — “I just need to get through this.”
-
The Duty Story — “I do what’s expected of me.”
-
The Achievement Story — “I’ll be happy when I get there.”
-
The Comfort Story — “I don’t want to rock the boat.”
-
The Control Story — “If I manage everything, I’ll be okay.”
There’s nothing wrong with these stories.
They often come from strength, resilience, and responsibility.
But when they run on autopilot, they quietly shrink our lives.
The Stories We Choose (With Intention)
At some point, something inside us wakes up and asks a different question:
Is this the story I want my life to be about?
That’s when people begin to step into higher-order stories:
-
The Growth Story — “I’m here to expand.”
-
The Courage Story — “I choose bravery over fear.”
-
The Alignment Story — “I live in integrity with who I am.”
-
The Contribution Story — “My life makes others better.”
-
The Mastery Story — “I’m here to refine my craft.”
-
The Hero’s Journey — “I answer the call, even when it’s hard.”
These stories aren’t easier — but they are truer.
The Power of the Ending
Every great book is written with the ending in mind.
Not every detail — just the essence.
When people gain clarity, it often starts with a simple question:
When this story is complete, what do I want it to stand for?
Not:
-
What title did I have?
-
How busy was I?
-
How much did I endure?
But:
-
Who did I become?
-
How did I love?
-
What did I contribute?
-
Where did I choose courage?
The Middle Is Supposed to Feel Unclear
Here’s the part most people forget:
The middle of every meaningful story is messy.
Confusion doesn’t mean you’re lost.
It means you’re mid-chapter.
Clarity doesn’t come from having your whole life figured out.
It comes from choosing the direction of the story — and letting today’s choices align with that.
A Gentle Invitation
You don’t need to rewrite your entire life.
Just pause long enough to ask:
-
What story have I been living by default?
-
What story do I want to live on purpose?
-
If this chapter had a title… what would it be?
Because life isn’t happening to you.
It’s unfolding through you.
And you are still holding the pen.
